Made in Britain, Remade in H... (Year III, Summer Semester 2022)

Throughout history, artists have borrowed elements from earlier works for use in new cultural contexts and applying new technologies. This class focused on one particular example of such borrowings: American remakes of British films, stars, filmmakers, and TV series, providing students with an insight into British cinema and its close relationship with Hollywood, as well as new media and adaptation studies.

We analysed many British films and some TV series, including The Office, The Wicker Man, The Italian Job, and Death at a Funeral, and then looked at their American counterparts from a range of theoretical perspectives, such as star studies, genre, adaptation, or cross-cultural exchange. Throughout, we also studied their surrounding discourse, paying close attention to the meaning of posters and trailers.

This is why for their final projects, the students were asked to work in teams and create their own little remake projects, from posters to re-cut trailers. They could choose any British title and adapt/remake it within Hollywood conventions to appeal to the global viewer. With their creative juices flowing, the teams came up with some amazing answers, designing posters and re-cutting trailers to create alternative versions of some of the cinema’s favorites, such as Bridget Jones’s Diary, Harry Potter, Mamma Mia, and more.

Meandering between serious engagement to more comedic and parodic encounters, each project nonetheless reveals something important either about Hollywood’s clichés and recent trends, stubborn British realism, or the subversive potential of some of the selected titles, forcing us to imagine alternative scenarios, question what we know and like so well and consider the need for revision.

Enjoy!

Ewelina Brudnicka and Mateusz Białecki – main poster, editing the image and producing the visuals

Aleksandra Dzięcioł- cast poster, creating the poster used to show the potential cast members for the remake

Mikołaj Kotkowski- researching the best alternative actors that would replace the original ones in the remake, acquiring reference images

As a team we made all of the decisions regarding the cast, visuals, details and the theme that we wanted to follow. It was a group initiative to make it a little over the top when it comes to the “Americanization” of the original version of the movie and to go for a lighthearted, funny perspective (including abundance of explosions or to allocate Michael Bay as the movie director). We wanted to make it as HOLLYWOOD-like as it is possible by including a ton of details. Every group member  contributed by giving ideas such as replacing the owl/phenix with a bald eagle and then someone suggested giving it a letter from school to hold in its talons. We had a lot of fun while producing this project.

By combining music and separately selected pieces of the film, you can completely change the plot and create a new story. Initially, we decided to take the well-known film Home Alone and change its genre from comedy to thriller. However, during the process of remaking, we realized that in the original film there is a hidden meaning that lies behind the humorous moments. A boy, who is the main character, grew up in a family where he was mocked and abused; nevertheless, his parents did not pay much attention to this.

Kevin was accumulating his anger for a long time but he let it out. While editing this film, cruelty and aggression emerged as the highest priority.

The process of completing the project took us 2 days. The first step was to write a script so that the selection of fragments would fit the new genre. Next, we focused on the choice of musical accompaniment to convey the atmosphere of a thriller. Additionally, we cut the audio and some sounds to make originally comic moments look tense. At the climax of the trailer, the track shifts to a more dynamic one.

The final shot is the sound of the gunshot which leaves ambiguity for the audience. Intrigued viewers have a chance to come up with the outcome of the open ending.

Pygmalion (1938) is a British film about a linguistic professor - Henry Higgins who teaches a young flower girl - Eliza Doolittle how to speak properly in order to blend in with the upper class. We chose to remake the poster for this film and make it not only more modern but also more akin to Hollywood cinema. We replaced the outdated parts and added more humour to make the movie appealing to a wider audience. We decided to cast Anya Taylor-Joy in the role of Eliza as her British-American descent creates a bridge between the original film and the Hollywood remake. Additionally, her popularity and elegant appearance are bound to attract viewers. Henry Higgins, however, is played by David Bryan Woodside. Aside from the actor’s talent, this decision was made to account for the fact that Hollywood productions are often more diverse. As for the poster itself, it includes a cheesy tagline which is supposed to signify the light-hearted nature of the movie. The design is supposed to replicate the generic Hollywood posters with simple cut-outs of the main cast against a plain background. The attention is focused on the lead actress. Her beautiful gown is intended to distract the eye from the desaturated objects on the floor, which reveal Eliza’s true identity.

Anna and I have created a poster of the British “The Office”. The inspiration for our work was a poster that comes from “The Office US”. What we wanted to do is to create an illusion that the British version turned out to be a box office success. In order to do that we took a picture from the original and tried to make it look alike with the American version. One of the first things that we had to deal with is the removal of the British realism that is an eye-sore, the removal of the dull office-like background also created a positive outcome. We changed it into an almost white one that gave more contrast with the characters. Moreover, we also added a quote that could indicate the goofy humor that was omnipresent in the American version and the logo of the company that was assigned on the poster accordingly to the British show. In the end, we made a remake of the original based on the remake. If this phenomenon is ever to happen, we would watch it eagerly. The fact that, in the beginning, the American version was a copy based on the British version makes us wonder whether or not the producers would go with a similar pattern copying what was so great in the American version that was a remake in the first place.

What if Mamma Mia turned into a James Bond movie? That was the question we asked ourselves during the first brainstorming session for the project. We decided to use our imagination in order to make it happen. After we watched the whole movie and made some notes, we tried to come up with the plot for our re-cut trailer and choose the suitable scenes. With the use of voiceover, subtitles, and music, our trailer reached its final form. The movie we are trying to sell is full of excitement, plot twists, secret agents, and mystery. The story includes plenty of drama and there is a possible forbidden romance between one of the agents and the girl who might be his daughter. It took us a week to complete our work as the project required us to use our imagination along with some editing skills. We present to you 3 James Bonds, Donna, and Sophie.

Patrycja Kwiatkowska and Julia Niedzwiedzka with This Is America poster.

We’ve decided to make the poster for the remake of the movie This Is England mainly because of the fact that the story is also worth showing in the American setting with issues that Americans, and especially black Americans, encounter. The world full of violence which is experienced by the 12-year-old Shaun is in many ways universal and that is why we thought it could be interesting to see it through the eyes of the Americans, with a change of the theme to racial prejudice and fighting for equality, at times the most prevalent problems in the United States. As for more technical side of our project we went for more gloomy and dark poster instead of bright, but washed-out one, as it was with the original version. The reason is, we thought of some mysterious and rather unpleasant suburbs and to convey this atmosphere we reckoned that this would be more suitable. On top of that we also decided for the main character of our re-made version to be in the centre of attention. That is why he is the most prominent feature and other members of the gang are in black and white and their faces are hard to recognize. What is also important is the American flag, which as it is commonly known is a huge cultural symbol of the USA. We had to include it but to make it seem more realistic we chose one that wasn’t perfect. I suppose that the poster overall shows our “reality of the American Dream”.

This is America

A movie readaptation made for American audiences. Taking inspiration from the original This is England a story will be retold in line with the harsh American reality. From the director of  Gran Torino Clint Eastwood and with artistic touch from wildly known cinematographer Roger Deakins, famous for his camera work in Blade Runner 2049. They will take you for a ride through the ostracized neighbourhoods on the west coast of America. This is America tells the story of a young Afro-American girl (Zendaya) brought up in the 80’s trying to find her way in a society that excludes her just because of her colour. Despite this she still believes in her American Dream. Being orphaned at a young age made her join a gang led by her uncle (Samuel L. Jackson) who teaches her and other kids of colour how to stand up for themselves. Her biggest oppressor is a white rich boy (Timothée Chalamet) who was the  enemy at the beginning; later they find themselves in love. This however does not sit well with her childhood friend (Jaden Smith). This will result in a love triangle that will highlight the deeply hidden scars of the divided American society.

We have decided to propose a remake of Bridget Jones’s Diary because it has been a smash hit romantic comedy worldwide, including the US. Therefore, its remake will probably attract many viewers to the cinema, ensuring box office success.

We believe that the American remake should be more progressive to meet the expectations of the American audiences. In order to do so, we have decided to transform it into a queer story. Both the main protagonist and his potential partners are male, so the remake is much more inclusive than the original one.

What is more, since most Hollywood productions represent (to a greater or lesser extent) the multi-culturalism of the US, we’ve included a part-Asian actor – Henry Golding – as one of the main protagonists. We’ve decided to cast James Marsden for the main role because he is a famous and very American-looking actor known both from comedies and from romantic movies. Similarly, Paul Rudd is a well-known American actor who starred in comedies and romances.

What is also worth noting is the fact that in American cinema both male and female characters are usually attractive people with perfect bodies and beautiful faces, whereas in British cinema that phenomenon does not occur that often. That is why we have purposefully chosen objectively handsome and muscular men for all of the leading roles in this remake.

We have worked on the project collaboratively and the ideas emerged through discussion. Once we’ve planned the poster, Weronika Czuryszkiewicz created it in a graphic program.
